Being an art collector is a bit like being a stockbroker. You can never be sure that your investment will deliver the results you hope for.

But, while on Wall Street, you have to navigate prices and speculation, serious art collectors get to spend countless hours among works of art, searching for a valuable piece. However, just as in the world of the stock market, there are successful art collectors whose achievements or collections cannot be explained by luck alone.

There are several of renown in Veszprém, i.e. those gallery owners and art collectors who have carefully selected the finest works of contemporary art over the years. László Vass perhaps stands out among them. You may be familiar with his name not only from the world of culture, but from that of fashion. Originally a master shoemaker – Vass Shoes grew to international fame under his tutelage. László Vass has a finely tuned instinct for valuable works of art. He has been collecting works by contemporary artists since the 1970s and has amassed a collection over the decades that has been crying out for an exhibition of its own.

This group of buildings next to the Fire Tower is not only home to the Vass Collection, but provides a venue for a number of exhibitions, literary evenings, small conferences and symposia. For those familiar with this kind of art, there is no need to explain why they should turn left just after the Heroes Gate, while for those less familiar with contemporary art, the House of Arts can provide some insight.
