There are many fantastic stories of time portals opening out of nowhere and of people disappearing and travelling hundreds of years forwards or backwards in time in the blink of an eye; yet nobody can explain this phenomenon. Admittedly though, that is perhaps because human imagination has simply been too far removed from reality in these stories.
It should be said from the outset that no tourist has ever disappeared in Veszprém and emerged in a different era.
So, there is no real time travel in the city, yet you can still discover the secrets of the distant past. Especially among the buildings of the castle, where the Dubniczay Palace with its ornate facade and patina stands out in particular. István Dubniczay had the castle built in 1751 in Baroque style. Back then, great attention was paid to the exterior of such buildings. The Dubniczay Palace too was built to precise symmetry, with two angels holding the image of the Mother of Good Counsel on the frontispiece of the tympanum. And thanks to conscientious restoration work, you can see it in its period glory – a journey back in time to the 18th century. So, it’s worth using your imagination as well as your eyes, as excavations revealed that the building had a stable, cannon bastion and a casemate, as well as well-preserved, finely detailed decorative paintings.
It is said that somebody once saw a medieval monk walking along its corridors, but this time-travel story has not been fully proven either.
