In many ways, Bendegúz is like any other small child. He likes eating, drinking, sleeping and playing and often doesn’t care about what the adults are telling him. He climbs up where he shouldn’t and steals every last crumb from the table.

However, there is one major difference between Bendegúz and other children, and that is that he is a gelada baboon infant. But this doesn’t stop him loving his keepers with all his heart and cheerfully entertaining visitors at the Veszprém Zoo. Bendegúz is a member of this big family of exotic animals here in Veszprém from six continents around the world. This little infant baboon deservedly basks in his popularity, as his style is overwhelming in the baboon house.

There have been many celebrities among the animals at Veszprém Zoo. Böbe the chimpanzee, for example, dazzled people with her drawing skills. She also learned to make coffee and eat from a plate. But we should also mention Suzy, the Indian elephant, whose life story could be the stuff of an action film – she was rescued from the war-torn Balkans in the early 1990s to come and live in peace in Veszprém. And a couple of years ago, a hot pursuit played out at the zoo when the resident sloth climbed over the fence, eventually being caught around 5 metres away.
