Prologue

The genius of Steve Jobs was not that he invented new things, but that he had a different approach to IT, a new way of thinking. And then, as they say, the rest is history. Something similar must also have driven the people in Veszprém who began working on the European Capital of Culture bid, with only one goal: to become the European Capital of Culture in 2023.

The success story could have ended in 2018 with the announcement of the victorious city, but it kicked off the festive preparations that will culminate this year. However, just as the Iphone was not a one-off, the Capital of Culture programme only started to unfold after the results were announced. So, what was the innovative idea that has led and can lead Veszprém to success? Interestingly, this idea was not formulated now, but rather 100 years earlier by the Mayor of Veszprém at that time, László Komjáthy. He was the first to write that Veszprém would only have a chance of retaining its cultural leadership in the region if it could look beyond its own city limits. And this is the key phrase in the Capital of Culture programme. The essence of the Veszprém bid was that the city should realise its ideas and ambitious plans and that people should release their creative energies together with the Balaton region It’s no coincidence that the Capital of Culture programme was also known as the Festival of Creativity.
