Castle Well
8200 Veszprém, Vár utca 16.

In the middle of the castle, ont he Saint Trinity’s Square can be found the Castle’s well, as they called it the „Dragonwell”. The first time they mentioned it in a map note was in 1569, but presumably it has the same age as the Castle.

It was used until 1767, after which it was filled with rubble. The ornately carved cava was made in 1936, courtesy of Bishop Albert Vetési.

The first attempt to excavate and clean the well was made in 1964-65. Then they could go 30 metre deep but it was not clear whether it was a well or a cistern (a cavern dug into the rock).

Excavation work, which began in 2002, has uncovered numerous finds. In the top half metre about 250 kg of 'lucky' coins thrown in by tourists were collected. Read more old wooden parts, nails, tin plates, fragments of pottery, ceramics and glass were found, copper coins and horseshoes. But the most valuable find is a 17-metre-long hand-forged chain was the most valuable find.

At 40.7 m, the bottom of the well was reached (this is the bottom of the Séd stream, which flows between the Castle Hill and the Benedict Hill

3.7 metres below the level of the Séd Ved and the Séd Brook), where karst water was found. This supplied water to the well, in which today still holds 3.5-4 m of water.
