Checkpoint Hunting Course – Orienteering Adventure Sport
Barátság park, Veszprém

The Checkpoint Hunting programme is a recreational sport initiative based on orienteering with maps. The Hungarian Orienteering Federation (MTFSz) organizes these events regularly across many towns and natural areas near settlements in Hungary, in cooperation with local partner organisations.

The events are open to everyone interested in active outdoor activities, especially those with a sedentary lifestyle (including people who have never participated in sports before), regardless of age. The project aims to introduce participants to the joy of physical activity through fun and engaging challenges.

Currently, checkpoint hunting courses operate in 27 towns, including Veszprém. In the summer of 2024, a new course was created in Veszprém, operated by the orienteering department of Veszprémi Honvéd SE. The checkpoints are located around Barátság Park, the Honvéd Sports Field, and the Jutas Vitéz Lookout Tower. The start and finish point is next to the street workout area in Barátság Park (47.104489, 17.911756). From a total of 40 checkpoints, routes of various lengths can be created.

Participants complete the course by running, walking, cycling or using other means, either individually or in teams. Along the way, they must visit checkpoints where they also answer quiz questions. The project uses a mobile application and a web portal to help organize and manage events, making the experience user-friendly and enjoyable.

MTFSz provides simple orienteering maps for each route, enabling even complete beginners to navigate and find checkpoints with ease.

The courses are versatile and can be used for playful competitions for children, creative movement activities for the elderly, and meaningful outdoor experiences for families. The challenge combines physical effort, navigation skills, and mental activity. The project also aims to create a sustainable model for motivating inactive or non-sporting individuals to get moving.
