Pannon Observatory, Bakonybél

Visitors are welcome at the Pannon Observatory, 35 kilometres from Veszprém, which boasts a 400 m² exhibition space dedicated to astronomy and space exploration. In the history of astronomy exhibition, you can learn about the famous Gibeon meteorite, antique telescopes, Galileo’s and Newton’s discoveries and experiments, mariners’ navigation by the stars and the greatest space expeditions of all time – the Apollo Program and space probe missions to Mars.

The Pannon Observatory is also home to the most modern digital planetarium in Hungary. From the comfort of their IMAX cinema seats, visitors take off on an unforgettable journey to the cosmos, powered by a 3D film double the resolution of HD, projected onto the eight-metre-in-diameter dome and accompanied by 5.1 surround sound.

Visitors can also participate in a special nighttime programme. In clear weather, the observatory’s dome is transformed into a telescope, showing the night sky in the given season, our neigbouring planets, the moon’s craters and mountain ranges, the remnants of supernovas and interstellar gas clouds. On the terrace, you can learn about the sky stretching above the Bakony region, with laser constellations and satellite identification.

By prior arrangement, groups can benefit from tours led by the Pannon Observatory’s own experts; admission tickets include a planetarium show.
