Saint Maurice Monastery, Bakonybél, is 22 kilometres from Veszprém.
The Bakonybél Valley has been populated since Prehistoric Times, but the first Hungarian king, Saint Stephen, first established a monastic order there in 1018. The Benedictines abandoned and returned to their monastery several times during the storms of history, but have been reestablished there once again since 1998. Eight Benedictine monks currently live there, dedicated to a life of prayer and work.
At the monastery, you can visit the newly restored Baroque church and look around the arboretum, herb garden and workshops as well as see where the herb drying loft. A free downloadable visual guide mobile app helps visitors find their way around. You can buy tasting vouchers at the café for daily tastings of the monastery produce. Moreover, groups can make advance bookings for a range of guided activities.
