Vaszary Villa, Balatonfüred

The Vaszary Villa is in Balatonfüred, 15 kilometres from Veszprém. Thanks to restoration work carried out in earlier years, the villa has become one of Balatonfüred’s most prestigious and significant buildings. The building complex mainly displays works of art, with its exhibitions complemented by literary events, musical and performance evenings. Sometimes you can even take a guided tour of the beautifully renovated villa led by renowned public figures and artists. In addition to the gallery, the villa also houses the Alkotóház, with its varied programme of events, the Vaszary Bookshop with its wide range of publications and gifts and the Vaszary Café, which offers special food and drink, thus ensuring you have a pleasant time.

A brief history of the villa:

Prince Primate Kolos Vaszary came to Balatonfüred for health reasons and became a regular visitor to the town over time. As the Abbot of Pannonhalma, he renovated the building; later, as Bishop of Esztergom, he bought the building and its grounds. In 1892, he built his tower summer residence, which can still be visited today. After his death, the building was auctioned along with its contents; while in the 1920s, it was transformed into a holiday home for army officers. The western wing was built in 1927. The building was used by the Soviet Army from the 1950s until the end of socialism in Hungary.
