Many years ago, a curious incident happened that was amusing to many at the time, but has now become a hallmark of adventurous and daring gourmet entrepreneurs.
Once upon a time, in the distant past, there was a gourmet get-together in Hungary, where every country from the Far East to overseas was represented. The idea was for people to learn about the food habits of other cultures and their most popular delicacies. On the Hungarian table, traditional Hungarian dishes were to be found of course, including beef stew, homemade pasta and floating islands dessert. Among the participants was a group of Koreans who liked the Hungarian food but were not given any guidance on how to eat these dishes. This is how it came about that one of the Koreans paired our steaming hot stew with the floating islands on one plate. It was said to perfectly suit Korean tastes. It’s a pairing that would still make us scratch our heads today, as would pumpkin seeds with salted vanilla ice cream.
However, the latter is not the result of an accidental kitchen mishap, but the award-winning result of a long period of conscious experimentation in Veszprém.
However, as the owners of the ice cream shop said, they are ordinary people from Veszprém. Both of them had and still have a middle-class profession and they opened the ice cream shop for the pleasure of it. And in 2020, their dedication and willingness to experiment was recognised by the industry with the title Balaton Ice Crema of the Year for their aforementioned pumpkin and salted vanilla creation. As well as classic flavours, you can also find specialties such as dill and curd cheese ice cream or poppy seed and sour cherry ice cream.
