Memorial Plaque to the Unknown Good Person
8200 Veszprém, Jókai utca 23.

One of the hidden memorial plaques of Veszprém is titled “The Unknown Good Person”, installed on the wall of the house at no. 23 Jókai Street in 2010 by the Veszprém Common Sense Society. It blends into the walls of the apartment building at the bottom of Festő Street just as modestly as the unknown good person blends into society: not ostentatious, not attention-grabbing; simply doing his job and bringing happiness to others. The idea for the plaque came from philosopher Ágnes Heller, who was also personally present at its inauguration. She made the following statement at the time: “There are many memorials to unknown soldiers who gave their lives for their country. We don’t know who they were, what they did, or when they died. So it is with the unknown good people; their names are not known to others. Good people work to keep us alive. They are kind to strangers and are motivated only by the goodness in their hearts.” That is how she came up with the idea of erecting a monument to these people.

The inscription on the marble plaque reads:

“The unknown good man acts with a simple, modest silence, doing what others can only do with great puffery and brass bands.”

The memorial plaque to the Unknown Good Person in Veszprém is the first of its kind in all of Hungary.
