The City Hall features as a prominent block on the northeast corner of Óváros Square. The romantic-style building was built in 1857 as a church bank and has been used as the mayor’s office since 1990. Once also a district office, it then stood abandoned for a long time before being renovated. And now the refurbished building is truly the pride of the city. With elegant wrought-iron balustrades decorating the two balconies on the second floor and their metal corbels decorated with leaves, the mural stuccoes, cornices and the state and municipal coat-of-arms by the entrance, this is a worthy headquarters for the municipal offices. Wedding ceremonies take place here, while exhibitions and lecture evenings are organised regularly in the building’s prestigious interior.
Lenke R Kiss’s work, the Girl with a Jug statue, known locally as the Zsuzsi (Susie) statue, has stood at the top of the steps to the romantic Ányos Street next to the City Hall since 1962. The fountain statue is also a popular attraction, often sought out and photographed by tourists.
