While listing the high quality, wide ranging cultural treasures of Veszprém, “City of Queens”, you should not neglect the theatrical world. Veszprém is noted for having three theatre companies. These include the regional, Veszprém-based Pannon Várszínház. The founder and creative director, László Vándorfi, ran the Petőfi Színház in Veszprém for many years.
In 2021, Pannon Várszínház celebrated its 20th anniversary. The Hangvilla in Veszprém also provides a venue for theatre performances. Audiences can enjoy high quality productions from a wide range of genres in Ajka, Alsóörs, Balatonfüred and at other venues across Transdanubia.
This publicly funded theatre presents five new productions every season; from 2012, it has had both a drama and dance company. There is something in the programme for everyone, from pre-schoolers to adults. The purpose of Ars poetica is to stage productions which redefine the borders between genres and demonstrate a new way of looking at traditions, in keeping with the achievements of contemporary arts, while also disregarding the constraints of genre. Continual crossover between traditional and contemporary approaches ensures that music, dance and visual art are not merely the art form used, but an equally respected, equally prioritised means of expression. This is the distinguishing character of their artistic work.
Every summer the TÁNC International Festival of Contemporary Arts organisers look forward to welcoming audiences from across Hungary and beyond, with the summer theatre programme from across the Balaton Highlands.
20 performing arts groups join forces for the festival to treat audiences to some 80 performances of theatre music and dance. Many of the performers are highly qualified, young experts in the field of theatre. What sets our actors apart is that they are outstanding performers in music, drama and dance.
Primarily, the theatre weaves the kind of contemporary pieces into it programme which are suitable for more than one kind of performance.
What could be more pleasant after taking a walk around Veszprém than enjoying an evening at the theatre? After all, as we know from Shakespeare, “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players...”
