Description

In 2017, a 2.76-metre-high copper statue of St Michael the Archangel was erected in Óváros Square, funded by public donations. Saint Michael is the patron saint of the city of Veszprém, the basilica and the archbishopric. The sculpture is the work of sculptor and engraver István Madarassy.

Satan is lying on the ground, i.e. on the rock, with his eyes fixed on St Michael the Archangel above him, who is defeating evil.

Heading towards Veszprém Castle, on the left side of Óváros Square, you can see several 18th century Rococo buildings next to each other, including Pósa House, built by the Cistercian Order of Zirc, which was named after its former owner, the book merchant and printer Endre Pósa.

City Hall / Statue of Zsuzsi

The City Hall features as a prominent block on the northeast corner of Óváros Square. Lenke R Kiss’s work, the Girl with a Jug statue, known locally as the Zsuzsi (Susie) statue, has stood at the top of the steps to the romantic Ányos Street next to the City Hall since 1962.
