Laczkó Dezső Museum

As a county museum, our task is to let the world know about Veszprém county and  give information about the world to Veszprém county people. We talk about stories and lives from the past, present, and future because “historia est magistra vitae”. The first objects of the most significant and oldest museum in the county were acquired in 1903, while our main building located among the shady trees of the city park opened to visitors in 1925. The 330,000-piece museum collection comprises items of Veszprém town’s and Veszprém county’s ethnography, archaeology, history, fine and applied art, and literature, and we have also got a significant numismatic collection.

Laczkó Dezső Museum of Veszprém’s permanent collection is currently closed due to refurbishment.

The predecessor of today’s museum opened its doors in 1904, thanks to director Dezső Laczkó. At that time, visitors could mainly admire the archaeological and natural science exhibits. As the collection grew, it became necessary for it to have its own building and today’s Dezső Laczkó Museum was established, enabling the collections to be displayed as they deserve. The four-storey, 100-year-old Palace of Culture in the centre of Veszprém was built according to plans by István Medgyaszay. This was the venue of Hungary’s first public library, the Veszprém County Museum and Library, which today is a treasure trove for researchers, as are the archives and photo collection. Visitors can look forward to academic and informative lectures and events relating to the exhibitions and collections.
